By now you’ve heard various definitions of IoT, all slightly different and probably not extremely helpful when it comes to your needs of strategically planing for the future. Below are some links from the digital signage industry on how IoT is impacting its future and providing some more real world examples. Hopefully they provide a bit more detail and start to help you actually make some tangible progress in evolving your digital tools or content delivery systems.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

Gartner has estimated that by 2020, 26 billion devices will be transmitting data between each other via the internet. (These devices range from computers, phones, watches, beacons, cameras, lighting, motion sensors, cash registers, etc.)
1. First Article (actually a 3-part article) on SIXTEEN:NINE (industry blog)
This article from guest writer Tim Strähle from Adversign Media, goes into some great detail on where IoT is taking is taking us in the near future. He also speaks to IFTTT (IF This Then That) and how this type of intelligence can offer a new level of significance and value. Even with this article’s retail focus, most of the ideas and examples can easily be applied to other environments such as corporate workplaces, events and tradeshows.
2. Second Article on Comqi (a Tech vendor)
One of the more in-depth articles with some of the best literal examples, Comqi speaks to IoT in retail. It is around their product platform, EnGage, but their statistics and list of actual devices and highlights provide a great overview with a level of detail that helps understand this new realm of IoT.
3. Third Article on DisplayDaily (industry blog)
An industry blogger’s take on IoT’s impact, new technology examples, and a couple good real world examples. He speaks a little on RFID, a hot topics in the IoT world, and shows some good growth projections in adoptions.
4. Fourth Article (actually 2 short articles) on Digital Signage Today (industry blog)
Here’s a couple interesting articles from Digital Signage Today which present some great stats around IoT growth and how the digital signage industry is prime for this type of evolution. They start to speak to how this new technology and connections will transform interaction and user engagement, and then how that can relate to customer satisfaction and also conversion.
