The Additional Element of Audio in Digital Experiences

At Signet, we are seeing more and more requests for the integration of sound in digital media display experiences. More experiential content is produced with audio in mind, and this creates a more immersive environment utilizing an extra sensory dynamic or explanatory context. As most companies are starting to use sound in their branded content, this is now a high priority and seen as something to be leveraged in order to maximize their content strategy capabilities.

 

Most displays have built-in speakers, but the actual broadcast sound is often obscured partially or completely by competing elements or noise in the environment. Recent advancements in directional speakers have helped to provide dedicated audio to just the designated nearby space. This solution delivers ample sound for patrons in the appointed area (usually nearby) and is effective at creating a distraction to adjacent noises or being heard beyond that pointed area range.

 

Sound control is critical for any type of touch-enabled displays: muting, raising, or turning down the volume are all necessary controls. Many interactive experiences have navigation controls filled with options, but a simple clear sound control element can be an easy addition for users to maximize the use of sound within a designated space. This is also a simpler solution when compared to requiring viewers to decipher volume control on the display itself (often on the backside or hidden due to enclosures).

 

A new development in this area stems from the introduction of mobile devices. Audio can now be leveraged from a dedicated device or a viewer’s personal device, usually streaming via wi-fi or Bluetooth. Signet has created a proprietary technology called Eyesync: a platform that allows the audio of a current display channel to stream out to a mobile application. This capability presents new opportunities for delivering specific display audio to users without any distractions from competing displays or environmental noise.
